ku-xlargeHow Manic Are You About Organizing Emails?

I get a lot of email. Not so much that it’s threatening my quality of life, but definitely a lot. I mainly use Gmail and I have some basic organizational systems in place (a label here, a star there). I have to keep up with the daily onslaught and maintain my inbox, but like I said I don’t associate a lot of stress with it. Email is embedded pretty deeply in my subconscious at this point. But some people I know have organizational methods that I find scary, and any system breakdown causes them emotional turmoil. Are you intense about inbox maintenance, or do you take a come what may approach? Organize your thoughts below. Read more here.

The Science of Hangovers

Hangovers only exist because it keeps us from partying and drinking and going nuts every single night. It’s a fail-safe for humans so we don’t all devolve into skinny blonde mid-twenties actresses at once. It’s payment for fun. It sucks. But what’s the real science behind it? It all boils down to three things.

Dehydration. Acetaldehyde. Congener. Damn those three things. Damn them in the morning. Damn them in the afternoon. Screw them at night.Read more here.

Shredded Cabbage w/ Cranberries & Balsamic[Vegan]

Super simple, super fast to make, and super delicious. What’s not to love? The crunchy cabbage serves as a great platform for the sweet and tart flavors of cranberry and balsamic. I wasn’t so sure about a salad made with cabbage that wasn’t a coleslaw, but once I took a few bites, I found it to be really tasty and it makes a great side dish for many mains.Read more here.

A company called Express Biker has created a self-serve vending machine that sells bike parts around the clock. The goal is to help cyclists who might be riding late at night or far from bike shops, basically times and/or places where getting a flat tire (for example) would be very inconvenient. The vending machines will sell things like tubes, lights, co2, patch kits, various tools and parts.

There are already two machines in function in Brooklyn: One on the border of South Williamsburg and Bedford-Stuyvesant at the Emporium Gas Station on Flushing Avenue, and one at the Mobil Gas Station at 415 Empire Blvd. a few blocks away from Prospect Park. They want to partner with outdoor locations near major bike routes throughout NYC that are open for 24 hours, such as gas stations, parks, etc.

ku-xlarge-1Why Your Ears Pop (And What to Do If They Don’t)

The surface of the Earth is covered in a thick atmospheric soup. Though only a fraction of the density of our oceans, the atmosphere behaves much the same way. Just as water pressure increases the deeper you go, air pressure increases the closer you get to sea level. In both cases, that’s because as you go deeper, you’ve got more and more air/water above pushing down on you. FULL ARTICLE.

In any discussion about installing bike lanes the argument often is put forward that they are bad for business, what with the loss of parking spaces and the increased difficulty of loading and deliveries. But what if this is completely backwards? TreeHugger alluded to this in How bicycles bring business to your community and There IS a Bicycle Economy, Two Cities Find, but here is the real proof from New York’s Department of Transportation.

ku-xlargeA Wind-Powered Factory That Makes Chairs, Scarves, and Pillows

It’s not often that we get to talk about engineering and knitting in the same sentence. But Merel Karhof, a Dutch-by-way-of-London designer, is an expert in both. You might remember Karhof from her 2010 project, the Wind Knitting Factory, a knitting machine powered by a small windmill. Built entirely from scratch, Karhof’s the four-foot-wide mill leveraged the wind to power a small, circular loom, which churns out scarves and textiles with a quiet mechanical speed. Karhof “harvests” the fabric every day or two (depending on the weather) and sells them on her website—along with a tag that indicates how long it took to knit.FULL ARTICLE.

I’ve been doing The Cooking Project for about two months now, and with nearly 50 different recipes tried and tested during that time, this non-recipe couldn’t have been a better celebration of what I’ve learned about cooking so far. This stew is all about cooking intuitively, figuring out what flavors you like and what will mix well together, and knowing how to use what you already have in the cupboards.

StrongmadesimpleTracyCrawling, Balancing, Rolling: The Importance of Practicing Natural Movements

My job is essentially to get people to have fun. I am a MovNat Natural Movement Certified Trainer and Parkour coach at True Nature Training who uses play and unconventional programming to get people active without realizing they are getting a workout. It’s so common to get stuck in our fitness routines. Push ups, pull ups, squats, and sprints are all obvious choices for a primal fitness program, but when we get bored or hit a plateau it can help to widen your repertoire to introduce new things. In many cases, this great “new thing” is actually very old. Natural movement is a movement philosophy with a set of principles defined and popularized by Erwan Le Corre, founder of MovNat, and based on natural human movements that we have evolved doing. Our ancestors had to crawl, climb, run, jump and more just to survive. Yet…FULL ARTICLE.

PattonOswaltGettyPatton Oswalt’s Powerful Boston Marathon Post Inspires on Facebook

Of all the pontificators and pundits reacting online and off, it was comedian Patton Oswalt who perhaps provided the most poignant take on the Boston Marathon bombing Monday afternoon.

In a post to his Facebook page, Oswalt wrote that while violence such as Monday’s tragedy exemplifies the worst of humanity, it’s easy to lose track of the bigger picture. The post reads in part: FULL ARTICLE.

google-glass-brain-effect What Will Google Glass Do to Our Brains?

Humanity is about to undertake a bold experiment. If all goes as Google hopes, many of us will be strapping on Google Glasses later this year. The post-PC era in effect since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad in 2010 could give way to a the wearable computing era prompted by Glass.

Though there’s always a chance that the technology could fail miserably, it could also, as Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst with Forrester Research suggests, be “the next Pinterest plus Amazon plus Facebook plus the iPhone put together.”  FULL ARTICLE.

In the weeks following the rupture of the Exxon Mobil Pegasus pipeline that spilled hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil ( or tar sands diluted bitumen) into a Mayflower, Arkansas neighborhood and lake, the news about the spill was just one depressing story after the next as we learned that wildlife had been oiled, local residents, including children, were becoming sick, contaminated water was pumped into the lake, the media was being intimidated to reduce access and coverage and that Exxon may have known about the spill earlier than they are letting on. hurdles 10 Psychological Hurdles Keeping You From Losing Weight (and How to Overcome Them)

Habits become ingrained in our days and in our brains to the point where it just doesn’t feel right without them. Now, if your habits take the form of regular exercise, eating plants and animals, and getting good sleep, you’re in good shape. If your habits look a little different, you might not be:

The coffee and crueller (stat!) on the way to work. The handful of candy beans every time you pass the candy-loving receptionist’s desk. The nightly six pack. The propensity to plop down on the couch and stay there for hours after work. We’ve all got some bad habits, and depending on their composition, they can disrupt our ability to lose weight. The mark of a truly great cookbook is one that you pick up and, as you thumb through the pages you notice yourself thinking of every single recipe, “I want to cook that.” That was what happened when I picked up Susie Middleton’s Fast, Fresh & Green cookbook. Often, you scan through a cookbook and find a handful of recipes you want to make, and even fewer you’re actually likely to make. There are precious few that cater so perfectly to your own personal taste and cooking style. For me, that is this veggie-centric cookbook by Middleton.FULL ARTICLE.

Touchdown-Jack21 7-Year-Old Boy Fighting Brain Cancer Scores 69-Yard Touchdown

It’s not every day that you see players and fans from both teams cheer at the top of their lungs when someone scores a touchdown, but that’s what happened when Jack Hoffman ran the ball into the end zone during the University of Nebraska’s spring football game.

Hoffman, a 7-year old boy fighting brain cancer, was given his own pint-sized jersey (#22) and placed in the game during the fourth quarter. One of his teammates handed him the ball, and Jack started hustling down the field while players from both teams followed — not to tackle him, but just to be part of the moment. He ended up running a 69-yard touchdown. FULL ARTICLE.

Tech companies are focusing more on energy than ever before. Brands aren’t just designing devices and gadgets for what they can do — they’re also considering how efficiently they can function.

When it comes to energy efficiency, solar power is a great option. It’s practically digital photosynthesis — if flowers and plants get their energy from the sun, why can’t we power our devices with the same? It’s also useful in emergencies; the power in your home may go out, but the sun will stick around and return the next day. FULL ARTICLE.

This is such an easy dish to whip up, and so full of bright flavors. The most important thing is to make sure to cook the cauliflower so that it is browned on the outside but still a bit crunchy on the inside. Like Kelly, I don’t prefer deep fried food so I used just a touch of oil in the pan and it was plenty to give these a nice fried, but not heavy, flavor. Springing Forward

spring_7

As the spring weather fast approaches we see a change of many things . . . The
Weather, People’s Attire, Mother Nature and even our food choices.

But why is that? Is it because we have been locked up inside for the
winter? Or have we been frozen to the bone and now are defrosting? Or
could it be something else that is just drawing us to a higher
vibration?

The changes of the season are not only a physical phenomena, but also
energetic. And it’s very necessary. Spring Energy is transformational – it
awakens the dormant, it blossoms the seedlings and provides the
resources for an abundant summer.

Spring is a time to take the top down or open the sun roof, but it is
also a time to prepare for natural changes in our life. As we begin to
get outside more and begin spending more time amongst the elements –
water, earth etc, we begin to get more connected with nature, we begin
to take in more Vitamin D from the sun and ultimately we begin to
re-connect with a natural energy.

So as you choose what to do this weekend whether it be a hike, bike
ride, taking the dog for an extended walk or maybe even a round of
golf, remember to take the time enjoy the outdoors – take in the
surroundings and all that the outdoors has to offer you.

In taking that time and expressing some gratitude, you will be rewarded
in many ways as your life is filled with the energy of the Spring.
