Birds of a Feather Flock Together

The most powerful influence in your life is who you associate with, as we were often told growing up – “We are who we associate with.”

A recent Harvard study found that whom you have around you the most, such as your friends, is the biggest influence on your wealth. So let’s do an exercise. Look at your cell phone to see what phone numbers you have dialed and texted the most frequently. Those names are the biggest influence on your life, your attitude, your wealth, and probably even your health. Doe any of these people on that list ever introduce you to a higher standard? Do any of those numbers talk to you about blessings they have experienced, kindness they have seen, books they have read or opportunities they have noticed? Or do these people call you about how bad their life is, how things are not going their way, and how bad their relationships are in their life?

It’s All in the Root

So on my last trip to Miami the discussion came up about the high rise condos and the ostentatious units and eccentric penthouses. At one point someone asked, “where did the name penthouse come from?”

So, on the flight home I began doing a little investagatory journalism (a classic term from Zoolander) about penthouses and here is what I found . . .

Both Britannica Online and Merriam-Webster define penthouse as “a structure or dwelling built on the roof of a building.” But when you dig a little deeper, you find some good information – from Mavens’ Word of the Day: “Penthouse” comes from the word pentis, which comes from apentis, which comes from apendere, which means to hang against or attach. A pentis was a shed with a sloping roof attached to a wall or building. At some point, people began referring to the structure’s roof as a “pentis,” and the actual shed became a “penthouse.”

So what does the definition of a penthouse have to do with conscious living you may ask? Well, look at it this way – while many things look inviting and desirable based on their label, status or price tag, when you get to the root of what it stands for or means, it may not be what you are looking for or want in your life.

Take some time to evaluate what you find important and make sure at it’s root it is in line with your life.

To Each is Their Own, Journey That Is

We often find ourselves “keeping up with the Jones” – where does that get us? Why do we do it? How do we get off that treadmill?

By comparing ourselves to others to determine where we should be at in our life, we are creating a trap that we cannot escape. Instead of asking yourself, “Am I as wise/good/smart/strong/fat/thin/rich as he is,” we can ask, “Am I as wise/good/smart/strong/healthy/rich as I can be?”

The key is to compare yourself to you. To take a line from the late Michael Jackson, start “with the man (woman) in the mirror.”

As you begin to look inward, begin to release yourself from that which appears around you. Stop comparing, measuring and assessing your value based upon what you perceive others’ to be. Start comparing, measuring and assessing your value based on what you perceive you to be.

Get Busy Living

There is a great quote in the movie Shawshank Redemption that says “Get busy living or get busy dying.” Those six words form a very powerful statement that may be a little confrontational to some people when they hear it. Those six words are not about death or mortality, rather they stand for a call to action to each of us!

This call to action is for each of us to be in action in the game if life.

Each one of us posses special skills and talents that we can use in this game called life. Those talents can be in our business/ industry, our friendships or personal relationships. These talents tend to be in the form of a natural skill set, a unique creative ability or a physical attribute. These talents can show up in everyday life as us being good with children or the ability to speak in front of crowds, the natural ability to cook or even the agility to perform challenging physical feats.

Regardless of the talent, many believe we have an obligation to get in the game of life and use these talents. This is based on the belief that if everyone is putting their best effort forward, ultimately the group/ community or society will achieve maximum results.

Within this obligation is the assumption that each of us will use our talents to attempt to win each time we step on the court and ultimately benefit ourselves and the others. It is also assumed that it is ok to sit on the bench at times and even watch from the stands, however when the time come, each of us need to be ready to get into the game and excel based on these skills we have been given.

What skills do you have? Come on we all have skills, maybe we haw never taken the time to recognize those skills.

When do you know it is time to get in the game and utilize those skills? Maybe the ability to recognize this will cone with practice?

How do you use your talents to win? What is a win for you in your life?
