marathonrunnersEvidence Continues to Mount Against Chronic Cardio

It’s been awhile since I did a post on chronic cardio. I had a good string of them going several years ago, and I thought I’d done a good job explaining why I was so opposed to excessive endurance training. Despite my attempts to clarify, though, I still receive a lot of questions and comments about cardio. People just have a tough time divorcing themselves from the notion that cardio – as much as you can cram into your schedule – is the key to health and fitness. I don’t blame them, really. It’s conventional wisdom, after all, and it’s what I thought for years and years. Clearly, another post is needed.Read more here.

A Tiny House Mostly Made of Mushrooms

After I asked Can we get rid of plastic foam in our buildings?, the tweet came through in response: “YES! We’re growing high-performance insulation materials that are renewable and far safer than EPS or XPS!” It was from the gang at Ecovative, known to TreeHuggers as the inventors of myco-foam technology, where they use fungi to bind agricultural waste into a substitute for stryofoam. Up until now they have been mainly selling packaging materials, but the green building material world is a much bigger market that is screaming for this kind of thing.

evernote-business-premiumGet Organized: Evernote Business

Ah, common office frustrations. There’s the back-and-forth messaging between employees for triple-confirmation, the sharing and re-sharing of lost Google Docs, and those long and confusing email threads that never seem to die.

But imagine how efficient your workplace would be if everyone — designers, marketers, C-suiters, salespeople — had a shared knowledge of all of your company’s information.

In his video “Humans Are Awesome,” YouTube user Gerry B. put together his favorite GoPro action shots in a dazzling tribute, showing the lengths to which people will go to have fun and live life to its fullest.

Not only does Gerry’s video show what those tiny, go-anywhere GoPro video cameras can do, but it’s a kickass showcase of this editor’s tremendous aesthetic sense. Notice his tasteful use of slow- and fast-motion, his cuts in just the right places, and the expert way he synchronizes the video to that triumphant music (“Time” by Luckner, featuring Sophie Louise).

Google Wants You to be its Street View Trekker

If you work for a tourism board, a university, government agency or research organization, Google wants your help in fleshing out its Street View photo library.

This duck is so high-tech, he even has a Facebook page
In this story, Buttercup is a duck (not a princess…). Sadly, Buttercup was born with its left foot turned backwards, which prevented it from walking properly and caused him great pain. Is Obesity a Disease?

You’ve probably heard that the American Medical Association recently classified obesity as an official disease. I’m still mulling the whole deal over, and I’m not quite sure what to think about the decision. First, what exactly is a disease?

A disease is defined thusly:

A disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, esp. one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.
A particular quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people.
