Do I Need Social Media for my Business?

Did you know that 1 in 8 couples married in the U.S. last year met via social media?

Did you know that 78% of consumer value peer reviews, only 14% value advertising? (Socialnomics)

On Twitter, The Harvard Bookstore says “See you all tonight for our Fall book preview winedown! Awesome upcoming titles. Free booze. 7 pm” (101 characters)

On Facebook, The Palms Restaurant says “You are invited to watch The Palm featured on BRAVO’s Top Chef D.C. tonight, 7/28 @ 9/8c. The show will be on in the bar and our Prime Bites Menu is available. See Top Chef, The Palm, and enjoy $3.50 Bar Bites”

The list can go on and on – the point is that Social Media is not a fad, it is here to stay, it is an intricial part of forward thinking companies marketing plans.

There are many reasons to get your business to begin engaging in social media, a few that stand out for me:

First, the trend for marketing strategies is online – watch the actions being taken by Fortune 500 companies, watch what market kneaders are doing. They all have a presence online and in social media. They are much smarter than me and have more money for market research so I am going to work smarter not harder and hop on the movement.

Second, as consumers continue to be bombarded with product and services, they are becoming inundated with information and an infinity of choices. Social media can set your business apart from the rest of the competition by creating a relationship with the consumer. By allowing them to experience your brand online, at no cost, can build a relationship that can later lead to conscious or subconscious buying behaviors of your products and services.

Finally, the fact that with social media the introduction is coming from a credible source (family, friends, and friends of friends) the consumer is more willing to accept what you have to say. This endorsement can be worth as much if not more than having Ellen DeGeneres talk about your product.

Accepting social media in your business allows you to practice conscious business by:
– having a mind that is active rather than passive (staying up on technology and trends in the marketplace)
– seeking feedback from others, to continually grow and expand (consumer interaction is the basis of social media)
– being receptive to new knowledge, and willing to examine old assumptions (listening to your audience and what they want)

Whether you are just getting into social media or have been part of the movement since the beginning, remember it is important to always communicate authentically with your audience.

I said Yoga, not Yoda silly

Well I don’t know what is more exciting – I am writing and posting this entry via my ipad OR this post is my humble attempt at explaining yoga (not Yoda as one of my friends thought it was called – lol).

So first as with anything yoga is a journey, enjoy it and with each breath you will stretch a little deeper into your understanding of this exhilarating physical, mental and spiritual practice.

Yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. Yoga menajatrio between the mind, body and spirit. (seriously – wait til your Kundalini is awakened)

To end any misunderstandings, Yoga is more than just stretching, it is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. And the various practices take you through the performance of poses or postures.

There are many different styles of yoga being taught and practiced today. Although all of the styles are based on the same poses, each has a particular emphasis.

The different types of Yoga practices:

HATHA
Hatha is a very general term for many physical types of yoga that are slow paced and gentle. These classes tend to be a great introduction to Yoga.

– I have enjoyed many if these classes throughout my travels across the us. I tend to find these classes very relaxing and peaceful due to their gentle nature.

VINYASA
Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath.

ASHTANGA & POWER YOGA
Ashtanga, which means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. Ashtanga practice is very physically demanding because of the constant movement from one pose to the next.

– I tend to get in a Vinyasa or Ashtanga class a couple times a week. They are a great workout and definitely challenge the mind and body.

IYENGAR
Based on the teachings of the yogi B.K.S Iyengar, this style of practice is most concerned with bodily alignment. Iyengar practice usually emphasizes holding poses over long periods versus moving quickly from one pose to the next (flow). Also, Iyengar practice encourages the use of props, such as yoga blankets, blocks and straps, in order to bring the body into alignment.

– excited to hear some feedback on these classes.

KUNDALINI
The emphasis in Kundalini is on the breath in conjunction with physical movement, with the purpose of freeing energy in the lower body and allowing it to move upwards. In Kundalini, the exploration of the effects of the breath (also called prana, meaning energy) on the postures is essential.

– wow and wow! Like I said wait til your Kundalini is awakened, it is pretty awesome. It can take a lot of practice to get to a point of this happening, but it is well worth the wait.

BIKRAM/HOT YOGA

Pioneered by Bikram Choudhury, this style is more generally referred to as Hot Yoga. It is practiced in a 95 to 100 degree room, which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating, which is thought to be cleansing.

– some people love and sone people hate it. I would not recommend this as one of your first classes.

(much gratefulness to about.com and wikipedia for the definitions for the different practices)

So the best things is to pick a type of yoga and pop into a class near you to try it out. (check out yogafinder) You are going to want to try multiple instructors and different studios to find what is comfortable for you and will allow you to grow in your journey.

Whether you are a newbie or a yogi we want to hear about your journey. Let us know about your practice.

Namaste

Favorite Vegan Restaurants in US

In writing this article, I hopped right into the top vegan restaurants in the US without even thinking whether or not you the reader even knew what I was talking about, so first I want to rewind and explain a little bit about vegan before we discuss where you should be going to enjoy some vegan cuisine.

So, what is a vegan ? ? ?
According to wikipedia.org, vegans endeavor not to use or consume animal products of any kind – This means no meat (fish, chicken, lamb, pork, beef, etc.) or dairy made with animal products. And yes, this includes eggs, sushi, and even Jello. (you would be shocked at how many things are made with animal products) If you have the pleasure of meeting a vegan, know that they are approximately 0.2% – 1.3% of the population – they are like an endangered animal, so protect them.

Why you might ask? ? ?
Some of the most common reasons for becoming a vegan are:
– human health
– ethical commitment
– moral conviction concerning animal rights or welfare
– protecting the environment (lowering one’s carbon footprint)
– Spiritual or religious concerns

So now that you understand what we are dealing with when we discuss vegan cuisine, here are my favorite Vegan Restaurants in the United States that you need to go to:

1. Inn Season (Royal Oak, MI) – for over 29 years Inn Season cafe has been dishing up some of the best in Vegan foods. You will not want to miss their Sunday brunch with home made cinnamon rolls and a tofu frittata.

2. Sublime (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) – Sublime offers a fine dining experience like no other. Sublime has a lively and fun atmosphere and unique dishes that caters to vegans and non-vegans alike.

3. Cafe Sunflower (Atlanta, GA) – In 1994 the first Cafe Sunflower was opened in Sandy Sprints. Since than, owner Lin Sun has been offering wonderfully satisfying entrees often filled with fresh vegetables.

4. Candle 79 (New York, NY) – It seems to be unanimous that Candle 79 is quite the experience and definitely worth the wait. The menu and atmosphere are like no other spot in the United States.

5. Green Zebra (Chicago, IL) – Chef and owner Shawn McClain won the 2006 James Beard award for Best Chef in the Midwest – this is no small feat. After your first bite, you will see why Green Zebra has become a Midwest Mecca for vegan Cuisine.

6. Dragonfly Neo-V (Columbus, OH) – If you ever make it to Dragonfly Neo-V, request to experience the community table. And after dinner, make sure to get a tour of the garden behind the restaurant where they grow most of their vegetables.

7. Madeleine Bistro (Los Angeles, CA) – In a city full of healthy eats, Madeleine definitely takes the cake (vegan of course) for its cutting edge vegan cuisine.

8. Millennium (San Francisco, CA) – If you are planning to head to Millennium, plan it around one of their Special Events. From an Annual Farmer’s Market Dinner to The Frugal Foodie Menu to Convert a Carnivore, Chef Eric Tucker creates an eclectic vegan cuisine.

Take the time to eat at any of these restaurants and you will find an amazing menu that brings out mainstream meals with a vegan twist. So, before you pass on dinner at the vegan restaurant, remember not to judge a book by its cover, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Let us know where we should stop and eat on our travels. What is your favorite vegan restaurant? Why?

Conscious Quote – The Gazelle

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a lion or gazelle – when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”
